When is the best time to take maternity photos?
A Houston Maternity Photographer’s Guide to planning the perfect time for your session
Pregnancy changes quickly, and one of the questions I hear most often from expecting mothers is, “When should I schedule my maternity photos?”
For most pregnancies, I recommend having your maternity session between 28 and 33 weeks. During this stage, your belly is usually beautifully defined while you are still comfortable enough to move, pose, and enjoy the experience.
But there isn’t one perfect week that works for every mother. Your pregnancy, how you are feeling, whether you are expecting multiples, and even the type of portraits you want to create can all influence the best time for your session.
As a Houston maternity photographer, I help my clients plan their session around both how their pregnancy is progressing and the experience they want to create.
Why 28–33 weeks is usually the sweet spot
By the beginning of the third trimester, your pregnancy is typically very visible and your belly has developed the beautiful round shape that photographs so well.
At the same time, many mothers are still comfortable enough to move through different poses, change wardrobe several times, and enjoy a full studio session.
This balance is important in my work because maternity photography is not simply about standing in front of the camera and documenting your belly. I use posing, movement, wardrobe, and intentional lighting to shape each portrait.
Being comfortable enough to move allows us to create more variety, from soft and timeless portraits to stronger, more editorial images.
For most of my clients, weeks 28 through 33 give us that ideal balance.
Should you ever schedule your Maternity Photos earlier?
Yes. There are situations where I may recommend photographing earlier.
If you are expecting twins or multiples, have been advised that you may deliver early, or your pregnancy requires additional considerations, an earlier session may be more comfortable.
Some mothers also develop a very defined belly earlier in pregnancy. There is no reason to wait for a specific week simply because it is considered the traditional maternity photography window.
The goal is to photograph you when your pregnancy is beautifully visible and you still feel comfortable enough to enjoy being photographed.
Your maternity session should never feel like an endurance test.
Can you take maternity photos after 33 weeks?
I have photographed mothers later in pregnancy, and beautiful maternity portraits can still be created at 34, 35, or even 36 weeks.
The consideration is usually comfort rather than appearance.
Later in pregnancy, you may experience more swelling, fatigue, difficulty standing for extended periods, or simply feel less comfortable moving between poses and wardrobe changes.
There is also the possibility that baby decides to arrive earlier than expected.
If your schedule only allows for a later session, don't assume you've missed your opportunity. Contact the studio and we can determine what makes sense based on your timing and how you are feeling.
When should you actually book your Maternity Photographer?
Your session may take place around 28–33 weeks, but I recommend reserving your maternity photographer well before then.
Booking earlier gives you more flexibility when choosing your session date and gives us time to plan your wardrobe, styling, and creative direction without feeling rushed.
You do not need to wait until your belly is showing to reserve your session.
Many clients begin planning during their second trimester. Once your session is booked, we can begin preparing everything while we wait for the right time in your pregnancy to photograph you.
If you already know you want maternity portraits, getting your session on the calendar early is one less thing to think about as your due date gets closer.
